How Much Is Enough

The WHO weekly minimums in minutes, and how three home sessions plus brisk walking add up to them.

The World Health Organization recommends adults get at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity. Moderate intensity means the heart rate rises but you can still talk; brisk walking counts toward the weekly minutes.

Muscle-strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups are recommended on 2 or more days a week. The 20-minute beginner routine covers squats, push-ups, lunges and planks — the major groups — in one session, so three sessions a week clear this line.

Three sessions of about 20 minutes supply 60 minutes of moderate-intensity work. The remaining 90 minutes to reach the 150-minute lower bound can come from three brisk walks of 30 minutes on the other days.

Strength sessions for the same muscle groups are usually spaced at least 48 hours apart so the muscle can recover. A Monday–Wednesday–Friday pattern leaves 48 hours between each pair and keeps Sunday fully free.

Above 150 minutes, the range runs to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week. Adding a fourth session or lengthening the walks moves you into the upper half of that range.

If you prefer vigorous-intensity activity, the alternative range is 75 to 150 minutes a week — half the moderate minutes, since each vigorous minute counts double.

  • Moderate intensity: 150–300 min per week.
  • Vigorous intensity: 75–150 min per week (alternative).
  • Muscle-strengthening: all major muscle groups, 2+ days per week.
  • Recovery: at least 48 hours between sessions for the same muscle groups.
  • Home contribution: 3 × 20 min = 60 min toward the 150-min lower bound.
  • Walking contribution: 3 × 30 min = 90 min, bringing the total to 150 min.
